There are so many virtual versions of things found in the real world. There is the virtual post office, the ubiquitous email. We can now telecommute as opposed to actually getting into a car and driving to an office, which would be pointless as there are now virtual offices. We can have conferences virtually thanks to programs like Skype. We even have virtual showrooms of actual stores where we can peruse and shop for items without leaving our homes.

This is all very fine and very, very convenient - at least for those of us who are connected. But like all progress, like all advancement there is a hidden cost. Pollution. There is pollution in the internet. Virtual pollution if you will.

The reason no one talks about it is because unlike most kinds of pollution, this pollution cannot be smelled or heard or seen. It doesn't intrude into our space, even our virtual space so why do we have to deal with it? But it's there. You know what I'm talking about. Dead sites. Websites, for whatever reason, are no longer being updated. And this pollution does have an impact on the real world.

Most of these sites are usually the results of someone who downloaded a free website builder and wanted to make a website. This person probably had a good theme for his website and thought how much fun it would be to keep it going. Creating and running a free website seems simple enough. What usually happens is that other things get in the way. Interests shift or boredom sets in or the owner finds that he or she no longer has the time to spend on it. So the site stays there, neglected and unchanged.

Why is this a problem?

For one thing the information for the website is stored in a server somewhere. That means electricity is spent in running that server which is holding information that is now obsolete and, because it is obsolete, no one is reading it.

It also increases search traffic. It lengthens the time to search for relevant topics because a searcher will be wasting time going through links that are now no longer relevant.

As information is stored but not deleted, people have to buy additional servers to meet with demand. That means an increase in actual space but, more damningly, increase in the demand for power. True servers don't take up that much space or use that much power but it all still adds up.

The thing is, the solution to this is simple. Delete your old websites. Host servers should have a clause that lets them delete materials that have not been updated after an amount of time has passed.

We should take care of our environment, even the virtual one.

The Pros And Cons Of Personal Security Device

If you spend any time at all driving or walking through unsafe neighborhoods, or if you are alone much of the time, you have to know which personal security devices are most likely to protect you. These devices vary from safe, non-lethal alarm-type units to lethal self-defense devices like firearms. You are able to choose which devices are good for your use.

Alarms

The aim of a personal security device is to attract attention to yourself and to scare away any would-be burglars or assaulter. The advantage of having an alarm as a security device is that it is helpful in creating a loud noise and scaring away burglars who are startled by the noise.

The problem with having an alarm is that it is virtually ineffective in a remote area where no one can hear the alarm. The exception, of course, is a high-tech quiet alarm which sends a signal of your location, employing GPS technology, to a designated monitor.

Non-Lethal Personal Security Devices

Another helpful personal security device is a taser, pepper spray or mace. The benefit of using pepper spray is that it is non-lethal - meaning it will not cause permanent harm to the assailant. The disadvantage is that you have to be in close range to your assailant for the spray to have an effect on them.

A taser can cause temporary bodily harm to an assailant and the assailant will be paralyzed for a brief period of time and in serious pain. A problem with these non-lethal devices is that the assailant can gain control of the device and use it on you. Certainly, these devices need to be used with good caution.

Lethal Personal Security Devices

This category of devices could cause lethal personal bodily harm or death to your assailant. These personal security devices should be used only in extreme circumstances where utilizing them is a matter of life or death. They are fraught with risk. Undoubtedly, self defense of your person or somebody else is generally a sufficient defense against a charge of murder or assault with a dangerous weapon. Nevertheless, it is up to a jury whether you used more force in comparison with you were entitled to use and you will not need to result in prison for causing a death while protecting yourself. On the other hand, you will not want to be a crime victim!

If you determine to use a lethal device such as a gun or a knife to safeguard yourself, have as much training as you possibly can therefore you know how to properly use, clean, and store your lethal gear. Getting legal advice is also recommended, as lethal force is not considered proper to protect a person's property, only one's life or health. As regarding non-lethal personal security devices, you run the danger of your assailant getting the device away from you and using this on you. Continue with caution.

Panic Alarms For Home And Business.

In all probability, every home and every business would benefit from the protection of a panic alarm. Breaks-in are common enough, but with people living longer the chances of stroke or heart attack have risen too. If you were living alone it would be awful to be lying on the ground incapacitated for hours. Panic alarms are the solution. They can be sited in a handy location or worn around your neck.

These are not the kind of personal alarms that emit a high pitched whistle or siren sound. Those alarms are meant to discourage criminals on the street or to draw attention to the user. No, I mean a device that triggers your home security system. it does not create a noise of its own, but communicates with the main security control box by some sort of radio signal.

Some of these panic alarms do not trigger the main security siren, but instead send a message to a monitoring security company. These so-called silent panic alarms are most often used in banks, firearms shops and places that handle lots of cash. However, any business could use a silent panic alarm. Household alarm systems usually trigger the external siren in order to signal your neighbours that you are having problems.

Panic buttons are especially helpful to the elderly or and infirm. Sometimes, people fall and cannot get up. You could also have a heart attack or stroke and not be able to make it to the phone. A panic button on a ribbon around your neck would solve this problem. Some of these panic buttons are monitored too and others even have a microphone and speaker so that you can talk to an operator and explain your situation.

Some of these panic buttons have a keypad so that you can transmit codes to the operator. Other means have been built into watches and brooches in order to make them easier to carry. If you wear your panic alarm, it is much less easy to forget to take it with you when you go upstairs or into the garden.

If you can afford security, you really ought to have a system, as good as you can afford, installed into your home and business. A panic alarm is a useful extra item for home and office use too, but it is especially reassuring to the elderly. Many older people are frightened of falling when they are in the house alone and fear of burglars or worse is a constant worry. A panic alarm linked to the main home siren is also a comfort to women living alone.

If you do get a home security alarm with a panic button, make sure that you keep a standby battery near at hand and check that the battery in the device has not become exhausted. You should also advise the neighbours you get on best with that you have a home security system and that they should come to your aid or phone the police, if they hear your home security siren and see the flashing light.

This new customer base is bringing life to a security industry that has been struggling along side many other industries during the nations recession.

Many of these new customers have been spurred on by a heightened need that is now being felt to protect those things of value that have been accumulated over the years. This is not just seen in the home security sector but in the extremely fast growing industry of identity theft protection.

As crimes in these area's continue to increase so is the awareness and preserved need to the customers for these services. Many households who never saw the need for home security ten years ago now will not leave their house without it being protected by a monitored alarm system.

Atlanta Georgia is a perfect example of this trend. It is a southern city with all the allure of southern hospitality and charm, where not to long ago most people weren't even locking their doors.
Whether at home or in the office, security is essential. Do not take this for granted until something unexpected happens. This does not have to happen to you, not if you will take the precautions. When was the last time you called Glendale locksmith or your local provider for an evaluation?

Emergency situations can be frightening. It is certainly understandable that you can be so distressed in such conditions. However, you need not be, not when you know that you have a team of men ready at your service. Have their contact number handy just in case. Keep a copy of it in your cell phone.

Remember also that this team operates on a 24 hour basis so that you can get the help where you need it, when you need it. Where ordinary people become panicky, not so for these men. They are highly efficient and capable in what they do, including at times of emergencies.

Being able to stay calm is an asset especially where a child is involved. There is no need to exaggerate the situation further as the child is worried enough. In fact, you should try to calm the child as best as you can, not the other way round. The waiting time is short but one can get so panicky that perception becomes out of context. You do not have to let this happen to you, or the child. Take several deep breaths, muster some courage and calm the child as well as you can. When you are calm, this effect soon spreads over to the child. Just comfort yourself that the team is on its way.

Again, this team responds very well to emergencies. Experiencing a flat tire? Have no fear; simply make a call and these professionals will arrive at your service. Ran out of gasoline? Call these reliable men and have your problem fixed in no time. These men have been responding to such situations time and again.

Your work place deserves safety as well. Employees who work in a place that they know is safe, work so much better. There will be no unnecessary restrictions on their parts when they work simply knowing that they are safe. As well, office equipments are expensive things that contain information which in the case of theft, may not be recoverable.

You can begin this safety effort simply by calling your local provider such as Glendale lock tech for an audit today.

Good workplace security is of the utmost importance. Without it, your premises, equipment and employees are put at risk. However, it is something that many businesses overlook, either because they are unaware of what they should be doing or they are trying to cut costs. Considering it as an unnecessary expense is a big mistake, because the cost of damage, higher insurance premiums and liability lawsuits can easily amount to more than the cost of taking standard precautions.

Having locks on their doors and windows is all that lots of businesses do as far as workplace security is concerned, but that is far from adequate. As well as having strong locks on your doors and windows, there are many other precautions that you should be taking, some physical and some training related. These are some of the workplace security precautions that you may want to consider...

- Hire a security guard to watch over the main entrance.

- Install a metal detector immediately in front of the door where members of the public enter the premises.

- Point CCTV cameras at all entrances and exits.

- Protect ground floor doors and windows with pull down metal shutters.

- Utilize an under-the-counter alarm system so that employees can discreetly alert security staff if they need assistance.

- Position your reception area directly in front of the main public entrance.

- Place a plastic window on service counters if large amounts of cash are being dealt with.

- Ensure that from their desk supervisor's have a clear view of where their employees are working.

- Run training courses on workplace security so that employees know what is expected of them.

- Utilize a code word system that allows employees to alert their colleagues if they need urgent help.

- Issue photo ID cards to all employees.

- Assign temporary passes to visitors, and require them to sign in and out of the building.

- Position furniture and partitions so that access to high risk areas (such as where money is kept) is not visible to members of the public.

Security Alarm Systems For Your Home

A man's home is his castle, as the saying goes. But homes today don't normally feature ramparts, drawbridges, moats and six-foot thick stone walls to keep out unwanted visitors. Today, a house alarm, and preferably a managed home security system, is needed to ensure your home's security. Not only does installing a home security system improve the safety of your family and possessions, but it can also decrease your home insurance costs. The Top Ten House Alarm and Home Security Devices list highlights ten devices and features of home security systems that can make your house a safer place.

The Top Ten

10. Talking Devices help you to understand the status of your home and monitoring as well as program the system. Some security systems feature talking master control panels, key pads or remotes. The talking feature may not result in great conversation, but it will help you understand your system a little better.

9. Some home alarm systems include extras like Key Fobs and Remotes to control the system at a distance. Somewhat similar to a car's key fob, home security key fobs include buttons to activate and deactivate the house alarm system. Some even include a "panic" button that activates the house alarm and alerts the proper authorities in the event of an emergency. Remote controls are similar and often larger. The features of remotes vary greatly and can include a full key pad, a talking feature and a panic button as well.

8. Yard Signs and House or Window Decals advertise your home's protection. The Greenwich Study of Residential Security found that homes without alarms were 2.7 to 3.5 times more likely to be burglarized, and that the most effective deterrent was the alarm monitoring company's yard sign (SIA Research Update, Security Industry Association, October 2001). Some choose to post the signs to deter possible break-ins without actually installing a home alarm system. While this effort will lower the odds of an attempted burglary, a yard sign alone cannot fully protect your home.

7. A Back-Up Power Supply is important in maintaining home security even during a power outage, when the risk of break-ins and looting is increased. Your home alarm should be effective even when your power is not. The easiest to maintain back-up power supplies use standard size batteries. Look for a model that uses rechargeable batteries to lower your maintenance costs.

6. Smoke Detectors add another layer of protection to your home, especially when they are integrated into the home alarm system. Not only do smoke detectors indicate a fire and give you time to escape safely, but when included in a home security package, they automatically notify the managing company and the fire department. Some systems even integrate the power supply to the smoke detectors. That means you don't have to change the batteries ever!

5. Wireless Systems protect your home without adding extra cords to trip over or extensive installation of in-wall cords. In wireless house alarm systems, each sensor or keypad communicates with the master control panel via radio frequencies or existing wiring in your home. A burglar will never be able to disarm the system by snipping the wires. This ensures the system is fully integrated and monitoring all parts of your home without using up your outlets or creating an obstacle course of wires for you.

4. Extra Key Pads are also important. Exterior mounted key pads can provide secure keyless entry to your family. Some systems also offer remote control key pads which are lightweight and portable. A home alarm system that features a security code with a key pad increases the security of your home. A monitored system can also lock down entry after several repeated, failed attempts at entry which indicate a possible break-in attempt.

3. Key pads may not always be enough to keep burglars out. Sensors on Windows and Doors reduce the risk of a burglar entering undetected and are a key part of a home alarm system. Motion Detectors within the home also increase the level of security. The most sophisticated motion detectors include a feature to ignore pets' movement to avoid constantly setting the alarm off inadvertently.

2. Installation, Monitoring, and Repair Services increase not only the level of safety but the convenience of keeping your home safe. A house alarm alone cannot notify the police or fire department in the event of an emergency. The most complete systems include buttons to notify police departments, fire departments and medical help instantly. Another advantage offered by the best monitoring companies is live customer support and full service installation and repair of the system by employees who have been background checked, licensed and drug tested to ensure your safety. Finally, some companies even offer relocation services to keep you secure even when you move.

1. The classic Master Control Panel is vital to any home alarm system. The central hub of the system, the control panel is usually wall-mounted in an easily accessible place. The panel receives information from all other sensors and key pads, computes it, and transmits relevant information to the monitoring company. If you choose to arm the system from the panel when you leave the house, the master control panel also receives the disarm code when you return home. Some can even be disarmed by telephone!

For many home owners picking the right home security system and monitoring company is extremely important. It is important to get the right information before making a decision on which company to go with as well as to make sure that the company will provide the services that will fit your particular needs.

Here are a few questions that should first be answered when making a decision for what company and specific service to use.

1: What type of security is currently at my home?
Many people move into a house that has a complete functioning system with full perimeter coverage. Most of the home builders over the past five years have been providing prewired alarm systems to their customers. If a system was built in with a house it will almost always come with all the doors and window wired into the system, providing full perimeter coverage. There are alarm companies who will not use an existing alarm system but will but a wireless system in that will only cover the doors and a motion detector for the windows rather than utilizing the window contacts.

2: What specific needs does your house hold have?
Every house hold and home is different so it is important to understand what is specifically needed for your particular situation. It is important to know up front if the system has the ability to monitor for fire and medical as well as police dispatch. If your home is not utilizing a land phone line it is important to know if the system has an option for cellular monitoring.

3: What is required by your insurance company and city?
Many home owners will get an insurance discount for having a monitored alarm system. It is important to find out what requirements your insurance company will have to obtain this discount before choosing an alarm company. It is also important to check with the city police department to see if they require an alarm permit. If you have a false alarm without a permit many cities will charge a false alarm fee that can cost 100's of dollars.
